Discovery+ has emerged as a preeminent streaming destination for documentaries. With summer coming to a close, here are four documentaries available on the platform to watch before the frenzy that is fall emerges.

Planet Earth

If you’re totally obsessed with all things nature, there’s perhaps no better docuseries to binge than Planet Earth. And no matter how many times you’ve watched it, it’s still just as beautiful a portrayal of the majestic planet we call home. August is notoriously low on seasonal content, but something about Planet Earth feels like a perfect late-summer watch.

Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy

When Stanley Tucci began sharing his cooking skills on the internet, he curried favor and flavor with an entirely new crowd, and he suddenly became just as known for his favorite sandwich as for his most notable acting roles.

In Stanly Tucci: Searching for Italy, the beloved actor takes his love for food and visits the cuisine-heavy country to learn more about the regionally-specific fare. This Emmy-winning series is perfect to watch in August as it’ll give you plenty of Tucci action and some ideas for using your bounty of garden-fresh tomatoes.

Prisoner of the Prophet

A new documentary that just hit Discovery+ in early 2023, Prisoner of the Prophet reveals unheard and shocking details about the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints from the mouth of leader Warren Jeff’s 65th wife. Yes, you read that correctly – his 65th wife.

If you’ve never heard of Warren Jeffs, don’t start with Prisoner of the Prophet (Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey on Netflix is a good option to give more context to Jeffs and his crimes). But if you’re familiar with the man and want further insight from one of the dozens of women he married and abused, Prisoner of the Prophet is the documentary for you.

Hillsong: A Megachurch Exposed

It’s not often that a singular church goes mainstream, but such was the case with Hillsong Church. Originating in Australia, Hillsong hit new heights when a group of celebrities – Justin Bieber, the Kardashians, and Bono to name a few – started attending services.

But as Hillsong: A Megachurch Exposed reveals, all that glitters is not gold. The church has been accused of exploitation by several past members and involved in multiple lawsuits, one seeking $20 million in damages, and those closest to some of the impropriety give their perspective in this scathing documentary.

Each of these documentaries is streaming now on Discovery+.
