It’s hard to predict what titles are going to blow up on streaming services. One that’s taken a strong hold on Netflix in recent weeks is Fisk, an Australian comedy series about a recently divorced attorney returning to work. Fisk isn’t a must-see, but it’s worth watching.
Fisk is a Breezy Comedy
There’s a lot of appeal to Fisk. Only one of its two seasons is streaming on Netflix, and the episodes are short, so it’s a quick watch. And while it is laugh-out-loud funny at times, the jokes don’t require much context. You can enter in and out of paying attention and still find the show humorous.
Fisk is a sitcom. And the great thing about sitcoms is that you don’t necessarily have to binge them to enjoy them. In the world of streaming, it might seem like a crime not to binge a show when accessible, but there are several ways to consume content, and one is by just turning on a silly show whenever you need a little escapism. Fisk will provide that for you.
You’ll also appreciate that Fisk is light. We’re in an age where art is expected to have deeper meaning. While art is a valid and important medium by which to express deep meaning and vital messages, art just for the sake of art is just as valid and important. And what’s more – it’s necessary.
Don’t Expect Many Life Lessons
Not every show is going to be The Sopranos or The Wire. Not every show can be, and not every show should be. Those shows are excellent and give us a new perspective and lots to think about, but they’re also really heavy. It can be cumbersome watching those shows. There’s a time and a place for them, but there’s also a time and a place for the shows that we watch without consequence.
And we’re not talking about feel-good comedies. Ted Lasso is a feel-good comedy. The Golden Girls is a feel-good comedy. Fisk isn’t a feel-good comedy. It’s a feel-nothing comedy. You’re not going to feel good when you watch it, but you’re not going to feel bad, either. You’re just going to exist, and that’s okay.
If you’re looking for a compelling comedy with something to say, stream something else. But if all you need is about three hours of mindless television, stream Fisk. And do it soon so the platform adds the second season.
Fisk is streaming now on Netflix.
