Two major Hollywood names will be making their way onto Netflix credits again. Oscar winner Regina King and Emmy winner Tina Fey have a film and a series, respectively, set to hit the streaming platform.
Regina King to Star in Netflix Original ‘Shirley’
King’s casting news in Shirley was announced previously, but the film now has a premiere date for the streamer: March 22. The Netflix original film stars King as the titular character, Shirley Chisolm, the first Black congresswoman who ran for president in 1972. Lance Reddick (in what will be one of his final onscreen appearances – Reddick died in early 2023) and Terrence Howard are among King’s castmates in the film.
King recently spoke with Harper’s Bazaar about her role, noting the importance of telling this story. “It was always a little disheartening for Reina and I to have so many people over the years of our lives not know who Shirley Chisholm was. What she did was so pioneering. She was a true maverick and, you know, we use this term all the time, but she was a true first,” King said. Shirley will join Seven Seconds and The Harder They Fall in King’s lineup of projects on Netflix.
Tina Fey Creating and Starring in ‘The Four Seasons’
Fey is returning to Netflix as the star and co-creator of The Four Seasons, a series based on the 1981 film of the same name starring Alan Alda and Carol Burnett. The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt producer is working with former 30 Rock collaborators Lang Fisher and Tracey Wigfield on the project, which is set to begin production sometime in 2024. The Four Seasons was picked up for an eight-episode season. No other cast members have been announced yet, but Little Stranger, Inc., Fey’s production company, is attached.
