The Writers’ Strike is Over. Expect These Shows to Return Soon

Quinta Brunson in 'Abbott Elementary,' a sitcom delayed by the writers' strike

The writers’ strike is finally over! A win for the writers is a win for all of us, and our favorite shows whose production was either halted or delayed due to the strike can now resume and begin, respectively. These shows should be returning to our screens soon.

Abbott Elementary

The Quinta Brunson-led Abbott Elementary (which she also created, writes, and produces) is quite possibly the best sitcom of this decade, and it’s certainly one of the best shows that network television has to offer at the moment.

Though its third season will likely be several episodes shorter than a typical network season (if it weren’t for the strike, we could’ve potentially had two or three episodes by now), we’ll be grateful for what we get. We’re hoping for a winter premiere of the show.

Abbott Elementary is streaming now on Hulu.

House of the Dragon

HBO has quite a few projects it’s focusing on post-strike. House of the Dragon, the prequel to Game of Thrones, finished filming its second season amid the strike (scripts had already been written and the show films according to a U.K. union contract), so it should only be a matter of time before the show returns. Hacks Season 3 should be coming to the station soon, too, and Euphoria, The White Lotus, and The Last of Us should be starting production soon.

House of the Dragon is streaming now on Max.

Stranger Things

The Netflix original Stranger Things has been on for what feels like 100 years, but it’s really only been seven. But fans of the Emmy-winning series can rejoice because Netflix is prioritizing writing a script for the final season now that the writers’ strike has ended.

That being said, this show has historically taken literally years to finish producing a season (say what you want about network television, but those execs really know how to get good television made in a timely matter), so don’t be surprised if we’re not back in Hawkins until late 2024 or even 2025. But rest assured, the Duffer brothers are working on it.

Stranger Things is streaming now on Netflix.

Wednesday

There wasn’t a single person (not to our knowledge, anyway) who didn’t like Jenna Ortega’s interpretation of Wednesday Addams. Along with Stranger Things, Netflix is prioritizing the writing and production of Wednesday, so prepare for more dark and spooky adventures with this iconic character. Hopefully the Wednesday team moves a little bit faster than some of its streaming home’s other series.
