The world seemed to be captivated by two movies this year: Barbie and Oppenheimer. Another film, however, nestled in between them to take the number two spot on the list of highest-grossing films of 2023: The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ Streaming Now on Netflix
The Matthew Fogel-written animated flick starring Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Charlie Day has found its (probably impermanent) streaming home on Netflix, just edging out Barbie for first availability (Barbie is coming to Max later this month).
In addition to the three aforementioned stars, The Super Mario Bros. Movie boasts a list of well-known cast members; the popular Nintendo characters are voiced by the likes of Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Fred Armisen, Seth Rogen, Khary Payton, and more. The animated film didn’t critically perform as well as Barbie or Oppenheimer, but it was a hit with audiences, as evidenced by its exceptional performance at the box office, raking in over $1.3 billion worldwide.
Potential For a Sequel
All signs point to The Super Mario Bros. Movie getting a sequel, but as of this writing, no official announcement has been made. Several other video game screen adaptations have been announced, however, including Sonic the Hedgehog 3 coming in 2024, a live-action Minecraft film starring Jason Momoa, Season 2 of HBO’s The Last of Us, and a Pokémon: Detective Pikachu sequel, the latter three all with dates forthcoming.
