Itching for a fantasy fix? No worries – the season for fantasy is always, even if it is the beginning of October and everyone else is watching horror movies. If you have Max and you were wondering if there’s anything good to watch on the streaming service, you’re in luck. It’s not even up for debate – Max is the crowned king right now when it comes to fantasy movies on streaming.
The Lord of the Rings
This could easily be an article about just the four The Lord of the Rings movies, and the three Hobbit movies, because they’ll keep you busy for a while, and they’re inarguably some of the best fantasy films ever made. And luckily for us all, Max has graciously included both the theatrical versions of each film and the 4-ish hour extended cuts.
A word to the wise – if you’re not well initiated on the genre and you’re carefully dipping your toes in the water, start with the theatrical versions (lest you scare yourself away from a good time). That being said, the extended cuts are by far superior and shouldn’t be missed – just make sure you’re up for the challenge. Oh, and don’t get too complicated. Start with The Fellowship of the Ring.
Harry Potter
Yeah, Max has all of the Harry Potter films, too. All seven, and the three Fantastic Beasts films. There’s nothing to say about Harry Potter that hasn’t already been said, except maybe that Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is a Christmas movie, and it’s a great one. So if you like to skip Halloween and jump right to the cozy winter vibes of Christmas, you know what to do.
The NeverEnding Story
If you were a kid in the ’80s or ’90s, you’ve probably seen The NeverEnding Story, and you probably also have a personal sense of nostalgia surrounding the film. Maybe you remember always seeing that strange creature (Falkor) on the box cover in Blockbuster, always wanting to watch that movie but never winning the family vote (just an example, not personal at all, we swear). Well, now is your chance, even if you’re not a kid anymore. You can make up for what you missed in the past. There, there – it’s going to be okay. Also, The NeverEnding Story II is on Max as well if you just aren’t ready for the fun to end.
The Age of Adaline
Oh, you like your fantasy with a dash of romance? Or maybe even a whole heap? Enter The Age of Adaline, one of the most gushy, sweet fantasy romance movies ever made. If you’re too cool to get in touch with your emotions, this won’t be the movie for you. But if you ever wondered what The Notebook would be as a fantasy movie where the protagonist lives forever, this might kind of sort of answer that question for you. Plus, you’ll get to look at Blake Lively for two hours, and that’s a win.
