We love seasonal favorites as much as the next person, but that’s just not everybody’s jam this time of year. If you’ve exhausted all your horror film options or simply aren’t into the genre, stream these classic romances this month instead.
Casablanca
A classic, the blueprint, cinema at its peak – however you put it, Casablanca is the ultimate romance film. The Humphrey Bogart-Ingrid Bergman Oscar winner is just as good today as it was in 1942. Whether it’s your first time watching or you’ve seen it a hundred times, Casablanca is stunning and captivating, and it’s the perfect antithesis to the horror of October (although if you ask Sally from When Harry Met Sally… there is no greater nightmare than spending the rest of your life married to a man who runs a bar in Casablanca).
Casablanca is streaming now on Max.
Breakfast at Tiffany’s
Nearly 20 years after Casablanca premiered, Hollywood churned out another classic romance in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Though it’s not the film that garnered her Best Actress Oscar, Breakfast at Tiffany’s defined Audrey Hepburn’s career, and her lasting style influence is thanks in part to the iconic little black dress she donned in the opening scene. If anyone gives you flack for watching this film ahead of Halloween, tell them you’re simply doing research for your costume.
Breakfast at Tiffany’s is streaming now on Paramount+.
Notting Hill
Moving into modern classic territory, Notting Hill, like Casablanca, is rife with quotes you know even if you’ve never seen the film. “I’m also just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her” will send shivers down your spine every time you hear it. If you prefer shivers of the romantic variety to those induced by a gory slasher film, Notting Hill is the film to watch this October.
Notting Hill is streaming now on Hulu.
Titanic
If you were to pick out appropriate scenes from the film, you could absolutely turn Titanic into a horror movie (and someone on the internet probably has). At the very least, this 1997 classic is a good option to turn on after you’ve finished a horror film and need something to cleanse your palate before going to bed. It’s not everyone’s idea of October perfection, but there’s no reason not to watch Titanic this month if that’s what you want to do.
Titanic is streaming now on Paramount+.
