Paramount+ Needs More Content Like ‘Colin from Accounts’

Nearly a year after its Australian debut, Colin from Accounts is available to stream in the United States. Paramount+ is the American home for the comedy series, and the streamer would be wise to bring on more international content to bulk up its library and establish a clearer identity among its competition.

Colin from Accounts Premise

As of this writing, two of the eight episodes of Season 1 of Colin from Accounts are available to stream on Paramount+, with the rest of the episodes scheduled to be released throughout November. The romantic comedy, created by and starring real-life couple Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer, follows Gordon (Brammall) and Ashley (Dyer), two people whose lives become intertwined after their meeting causes major injuries to a stray dog. The series is an easy watch with heart and plenty of Australian humor. Earlier this year, it was renewed for a second season.

Of the major streaming services in the United States, Paramount+ is far behind most of its competitors, only eking out Apple TV+ and Discovery+ in 2022 in number of users. While it has attractive features like live TV and a Showtime add-on, and arguably the highest-quality movie selection of any major streaming service in the U.S., Paramount+ lacks an identity when it comes to television series. If it’s going to compete with Netflix, Prime Video, and Hulu, Paramount+ needs to license more solid TV content, international series like Colin from Accounts, for example.

As it stands, Paramount+ is best known for creating the Yellowstone spin-offs. It’s tried to appeal to similar audiences with other original gritty dramas like Joe Pickett and Lawmen: Bass Reeves, both of which have received critical acclaim, but those series will only retain a certain demographic. The platform has also gone the reboot and spin-off route with offerings such as The Good Fight, iCarly (2021), and Frasier (2023), but two of those have already been canceled. Additionally, Paramount+ has made several attempts at reality series, but none have made a splash in the saturated genre.

Bring On International Offerings

Adding more options like Colin from Accounts would give Paramount+ an edge over its competitors as the top streamer to find quirky international comedy series. Netflix has already acquired similar titles like Fisk and Cunk on Earth, but with an overwhelming number of options on Netflix, those and similar series fade quickly. A smaller platform like Paramount+ would allow international series to shine in the U.S. while drawing in audiences attracted to that type of content. In the meantime, we suggest giving Colin from Accounts a watch.
