Let the Right One In
Let the Right One In is one of the best horror novel adaptations of the 21st century, balancing chilling horror with surprisingly romantic undertones in equal measure. As the film progresses, the audience gets slowly lured in by the icy landscape, relatable coming-of-age drama, and the youthful discovery of first love while a new resident in town is vampirically preying on the locals.
A lonely Swedish boy befriends his odd new neighbor, another twelve-year-old whom he only sees at night. Despite growing concerns among the adults about something attacking and draining people’s blood around the area, this boy worries only about his growing attachment to his new friend.
Train to Busan
If you want zombies, action, drama, and tear-jerkingly gripping emotions, Train to Busan brings it all together. The intensity and nastiness of this movie are unparalleled in modern zombie horror, which has petered out in recent years following a massive surge of interest since 2000.
A father, growing distant from his young daughter due to prioritizing work, offers to take a train ride with her to Busan, where she will live with her mother. Amid their familial turmoil, a viral outbreak causing violent riots occurs nationwide, and the passengers have to fend for themselves while trapped on board with a growing zombie population.
Nope
Following Get Out and Us, Jordan Peele sought a different, even more ambitious tone with Nope, resulting in a highly entertaining but bizarre film. Peele’s third film as writer/director brings back Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya to join grief, trauma, family, inexplicable circumstances, and comedy in one movie, so anyone looking to get a bit of everything from a modern horror movie should look into this one.
Trying to keep the family business afloat after their dad’s death, two siblings discover a strange phenomenon above their ranch. Seeing the opportunity to make a huge profit off of it, they soon discover that wading into uncharted territory can be far harder and more dangerous than they expected.
Totally Killer
For a streaming option with more humor than horror, the new slasher-comedy Totally Killer should balance out the seriousness of these other films, knowingly parodizing and self-aware of the ridiculousness of its premise. The Back to the Future undercurrent in this one gives it an amusing twist for a unique 1980s-set period film, and the sheer idiocy of the ’80s teens in the face of a brutal murderer gets frequent laughs.
Kiernan Shipka plays a teen in the present, where a mysterious murderer from 35 years ago suddenly resurfaces for another killing spree. While running for her life, our heroine travels back to a time just before the original murders and hopes to convince her future parents that their lives are in danger.
