Golden Globes: Where to Stream the Best Nominated Movies

Ben Affleck in 'Air,' a film nominated at the 2024 Golden Globes

The 2024 Golden Globes ceremony is under a month away, so streaming audiences will likely be unable to watch all the nominated films in time. Many top-notch films past their theatrical period are available to stream, however, not all of them are easy to find. Practically every featured film you can see is on the list below, so now is the time to start binge-watching before the ceremony.

Caveat: Many are Still Only on VOD

While nearly half of the 36 films nominated for Golden Globes still cannot be viewed from the comforts of home, many of the best, including Past LivesOppenheimer, and Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, remain bound to their rental periods. We know that some of these films, like Killers of the Flower Moon and Beau Is Afraid, will be on streaming services in no time, but even summer favorite Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One still requires six dollars to view this month. However, all these mentioned ones would be worth the extra dough, and The Holdovers shows up just in time for the holiday season.

Netflix Wins the Golden Globes Nomination Game

Original films and pick-ups from other studios make Netflix the go-to streamer for nominated movies right now. The top of the pack is the internet’s favorite of 2023, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, already an all-time essential across the web. May December snagged even more nominations than Spider-Verse thanks to three killer central performances, while Nyad and Rustin showcase two more actors in their prime.

The maligned side of Netflix’s Golden Globes nominations comes out through the popular animated feature The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Jennifer Lawrence’s icky adult comedy vehicle No Hard Feelings. Despite mixed opinions, these two have stuck in public favor, so Netflix proves again that it is the pinnacle of high and low-brow entertainment.

Prime Video and Disney+ Hold Their Own

Disney always gets a handful of nominations across the awards spectrum, and in 2023, the two champions emerging are Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Pixar’s Elemental. While the latter did not fully satisfy all viewers with its attempted mix of allegory and silly kid humor, James Gunn’s third Guardians of the Galaxy film found audiences and critics calling it the best of the sub-franchise. It is still a latter-day Marvel sequel, meaning few considered it perfect, but enjoyable nonetheless.

On Prime Video, Toho’s continued collaboration with Your Name writer/director Makoto Shinkai resulted in Suzume last year, arriving for American audiences through the Crunchyroll add-on. The only Amazon Studios exclusive right now is Air, but this Air Jordan origin story featuring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck should be enough to warrant a Prime Video subscription.

Max and Starz Barely Get a Feature Film on the December Slate

Though these streaming services will likely have more Golden Globe nominees available in 2024, late or extended theatrical releases of these films keep options limited in December. Starz only picked up one nominee so far, but it is a good one: John Wick: Chapter 4 managed to (possibly) end an already standout franchise with perhaps its best entry.

The excessive roll-out of this last movie lost Max plenty of subscribers unwilling to pay for the months of waiting, but it is finally here. Barbie lands on Max in its subscription service debut after a long time in theaters and a couple extra months of rental only. Leading the day with nine nominations, this is the number one choice to catch up on ahead of some wins for Barbie and Warner Bros. at the 2024 Golden Globes ceremony.
