Sometimes it can be hard to find what you want to watch on streaming services. Their algorithms can do a great job at showing you what’s popular and help you discover some favorites, but they can also make what’s available seem hidden. That’s exactly why we’ve scoured the depths of Peacock to find some of the best thrillers streaming now.
Coherence
Coherence is a one-of-a-kind thriller with a sci-fi slant. It’s about friends together at a dinner party when a comet is passing overhead; we won’t say any more than that. Instead, we’ll tell you why it’s so unique. The film is completely improvised by the cast, who generally had little idea of what was going on. They would shoot scenes with only a small snippet of notes about what their character had to do during filming that day, but they had no clue what the other actors were instructed to do. It was a daring stunt by the directors, and it paid off.
Train to Busan
As a zombie movie, Train to Busan comfortably straddles the line between thriller and horror, but it’s not very scary. The true reason to watch this movie is the compelling emotional center of the story: the relationship between a father and daughter. Don’t be put off by the subtitles, it’s absolutely worth the effort. This is one of our favorite zombie movies, and there’s a good chance it will become yours, too.
Burning
Based on a short story by Japan’s most popular author, Haruki Murakami, Burning is quirky, beautiful, mysterious, and yes, thrilling. It’s another movie on the “We can’t say too much or we’ll spoil it” list, but let’s keep it simple: Burning is about a man with a secret hobby, which you might be able to make a solid guess on. Upon release, the film was adored on the festival circuit, winning many awards, and when you watch it, you’ll immediately understand why.
The Invitation
As far as thrillers go, The Invitation hits all the right notes. It’s suspenseful, mysterious, and intriguing. As far as the plot goes, it centers around a man who accepts an invitation to a dinner party from his ex-wife. The tension created by an unsettled past and open wounds lead to some interesting developments. Turns out, dinner parties are a common setting for thrillers – apparently food brings out another side of people.
Psycho
If you haven’t seen it, you should know that Psycho is simultaneously the granddaddy and the pinnacle of the thriller genre. If you have seen it, it’s probably about time for a rewatch. There’s a reason that the name Alfred Hitchcock is still known around the world, and Psycho is a huge part of it. Don’t be put off by the fact that this movie was made in 1960 – it still watches like it was made today. Don’t read anything about this movie, just watch. Trust us, that’s the best way to do it.
All of these movies are streaming now on Peacock.
