The new year has brought new cancellations. As does every year, 2023 took with it an onslaught of bygone television, and 2024 is already following the same path with four streaming shows already canceled.
Max Cancellations
One of the first cancellations of the year was the Max original Our Flag Means Death. Starring Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi, the period comedy about a wealthy man who becomes a pirate amid a mid-life crisis got the boot after just two seasons, the second of which aired in 2023. Following suit is Julia, the series chronicling Julia Child’s rise to fame. Julia’s second season finished airing in December of 2023.
For those upset to see a Waititi project leaving their screen, he is still involved in the successful comedy series What We Do in the Shadows, which was adapted from the 2014 movie of the same name starring, written, and directed by Waititi along with his frequent collaborator Jemaine Clement. What We Do in the Shadows the series is streaming now on Hulu.
Other Platforms Giving Shows the Axe, Too
In addition to the Max chops, Starz chopped Minx, the comedy starring Ophelia Lovibond and Jake Johnson. Minx’s first season aired on Max and was picked up for a second season at Starz after Max booted it. Finally, Disney+ ended American Born Chinese. The series, which featured Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh, only lasted for one season.
Jake Johnson and Michelle Yeoh haven’t gone too far. Yeoh is in the series The Brothers Sun, which is streaming now on Netflix, and her film A Haunting in Venice, which came out in 2023, is streaming now on Hulu. Johnson, meanwhile, just made his directorial debut with the movie he wrote and stars in alongside Anna Kendrick, Self Reliance, which is streaming now on Hulu.
