Mindy Kaling is returning to Netflix, and she’s bringing (likely) an unknown actor along. The actor, writer, and producer is creating a new series for the streamer, and she’s posted an open casting call to fill one of the spots.
Mindy Kaling is Seeking a Latino Actor
Per Kaling’s post on Instagram, she is seeking a Hispanic/Latino male with acting experience to play an 18-year-old. The role is for Kaling’s upcoming Netflix comedy series that she’s producing alongside David Stassen, Ike Barinholtz, and Howard Klein. “I love open casting calls because it allows my company, @kalinginternational to give opportunities to talented actors who don’t have access to us,” Kaling said of the call.
Kaling’s Successful History at Netflix
Mindy Kaling has had great success with Netflix. The platform currently houses her first comedy series post-The Office, The Mindy Project, which she created, produced, wrote, and starred in. Kaling also co-created, wrote, and produced the Netflix original series Never Have I Ever, which ended in 2023 after four seasons. Kaling’s production company found Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, the star of Never Have I Ever, through an open casting call similar to what Kaling is holding now.
Netflix isn’t the only streaming platform that hosts Kaling’s work. The Emmy-nominated writer/producer is the showrunner behind The Sex Lives of College Girls, which is streaming now on Max. The platform also holds her executive-produced series Velma, and Hulu holds her executive-produced series Four Weddings and a Funeral. Kaling has also appeared on a variety of episodes of the Apple TV+ series The Morning Show. The series will be returning for a fourth season, but no word on whether Kaling will join the cast for a batch of additional episodes.
